Background

The conflict appeared, on the surface, to be based on racial grounds. It could have become extremely serious with peers from the wider community getting involved. It was clear that someone could have been seriously hurt.

Activity

Herman and his team did some excellent mediation work with key individuals on a one to one basis and through group sessions. The intervention and mediation worked exceptionally well. Herman brought his calm but determined and focussed manner to the whole process. He allowed the children to see that there was an alternative to fighting; in fact he gave them the arena and tools to question why they were fighting.

Impact

The end result; the atmosphere around the school does not reflect that a fight had taken place. The students who took part in the mediation all commented on how useful they found the sessions.

Verdict

Over the years that I have known Herman he has shown that he is capable of working with young people in times of crisis and also with troubled individuals. His approach is very professional and reflects a unique understanding and respect for young people. He can be relied upon to bring reason and purpose where there appears to be only chaos.
